Happy Mother's Day - 9 May 2010

“Her children rise up and bless her; her husband also, and he praises her, saying: ‘Many daughters have done nobly, but you excel them all.’ Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain. But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised” (Proverbs 31:28-30)

My mother fell asleep in Jesus on September 18, 1993 at the young age of 72 from a heart attack. The family deeply misses her and will always have fond and wonderful memories of her. After her death for about 2 years, I wrote quite a few poems. The following is one that came to me one day while I was waiting to take a bus home from downtown Minneapolis.

I Looked Up in the Heavens
by Bonnie Backlund
I looked up in the heavens;
I thought I saw you there.
I looked up in the heavens,
Your face—it did appear.

I looked up in the clouds,
and asked the question—why?
Did such a sweet, kind person,
Ever have to die?

It hardly seems fair
to have left us here below,
Our hearts ache with sadness,
Why did you have to go?

But God said your time had come,
He really knows what’s best,
I looked up in the heavens,
And there found perfect rest.

I wish everyone a Happy Mother’s Day as you spend time with your mother today, your family, and your loved ones. I think of my Mom every day and look forward to the day we will be reunited in eternity.
